HTML (last held July 2002, next date to be announced) 

Learn how to code Web pages from scratch using HTML, including creating links and inserting images. You'll also learn how to to upload your files to a Web server! 

Prerequisites:  

  • Comfort in working on a PC 
  • Solid typing skills 
  • Ability to save files to a floppy and a hard drive 
  • Ability to copy and paste text 
  • Familiarity with Web browsers, sending e-mail, and basic Internet terminology

Cascading Style Sheets (last held August 2002, next date to be announced) 

Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of using cascading style sheets. Find out what selector, class, and property mean. Control fonts, format, and spacing by creating a local, internal, and external style sheet. Get a basic introduction to Macromedia HomeSite as well--all coding will be done in HomeSite!  

Prerequisites: 

  • Ability to code HTML without using a WYSIWYG editor
  • Comfort working on a PC
  • Ability to type reasonably well and perform basic computer tasks (such as Copy, Paste, and Save) 
Note: This workshop is not for beginning computer users. Students should be extremely comfortable working in and moving from one Windows software program to another. Students also need a good working knowledge of browsers, Web terminology, and the Internet.

Dreamweaver (last held July 2002, next date to be announced) 

Learn how to use Dreamweaver to speed up Web site development! 

Prerequisites:  

  • Comfort in working on a PC 
  • Solid typing skills 
  • Ability to save files to a floppy and a hard drive 
  • Ability to copy and paste text 
  • Familiarity with Web browsers, sending e-mail, and basic Internet terminology 
HTML skills are not necessary, but Dreamweaver will be easier to learn if you have prior HTML experience!

Create Web graphics and modify images with Fireworks! 

Prerequisites:  

  • Comfort in working on a PC
  • Ability to save files to a floppy and a hard drive 
A basic understanding of graphic file types will help, but we will cover everything from scratch.

A Chrissy Rey Class--Intro to Flash MX

1. Flash Basics 

  • Finding your way around Flash
  • Modifying preferences
  • Knowing where to find additional help 
2. Drawing in Flash 
  • Exploring the toolbox 
  • Creating simple shapes 
  • Understanding how Flash handles fills and strokes 
3. Working With Symbols 
  • Importing artwork 
  • Creating a symbol 
  • Exploring the library 
  • Using symbol instances 
4. Creating Animation 
  • Creating a motion tween 
  • Creating a shape tween 
5. Basic Interactivity 
  • Stopping the movie 
  • Using a button to open a Web page 
Prerequisites:  
  • Comfortable working on a PC 
  • Typing skills 
  • Familiarity with a graphics software program (such as Macromedia Fireworks, Adobe ImageReady, Adobe Photoshop, Jasc Paint Shop Pro)
  • Understanding of what Flash is and what it can do
Note: Students do not need any experience using Flash as this workshop is for Flash newbies 

Instructor: Chrissy Rey is a freelance Web developer and instructor in the Washington, DC, area. She is the author of Macromedia Flash MX: Training from the Source (Macromedia Press). She has also been a contributing author and technical editor for several books about Flash. 

A Maryland native, Chrissy Rey graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in zoology (of all things). After brief stints as a zookeeper and an animal technician in a genetics lab, Chrissy discovered Flash while working as a contractor at the U.S. Trustee Program.

ColdFusion (last held February 2002, next date to be announced) 

This workshop is a two-hour snapshot of Digital Division's Web Programmer Boot Camp. During this time we will create a registration form with password protection. 

Areas covered include-- 

  • Built-in field validation
  • Customized confirmation pages
  • Sending confirmation e-mail messages
  • Validation of log-in names and passwords against a database
Prerequisites:  
  • Comfort in coding in HTML 
  • Experience working with HTML forms
