Is Open Source Software (OSS) in Your Future? Status, Trends, and Expectations Speaker: Frank Hum, Manager, Networks and x Series Servers, Computer Applications Specialists Audience: Those using or considering a transition to OSS. Open source software (OSS) program licenses allow users to run the programs for any purpose, to study and modify the programs, and to distribute copies of the original or modified programs without requiring royalty payments.Some OSS has a reputation for being low cost, secure, reliable, high performance, and flexible. Uses include firewalls, e-mail, Web servers, Web application servicing, database serving, network management, directory services, and business applications. One of the most visible examples of OSS is the operating system known as GNU/Linux (or Linux). This presentation, opening with a brief history of the OSS movement, will cover status, trends, and expectations in OSS. Join us for this information-packed discussion on what's happening in the world of OSS and what business applications are being used. Speaker: Frank Hum has 20 years of experience in the computer industry doing system engineering, development, and project management.Currently he is the Manager of Networks and x Series Servers at Computer Applications Specialists, one of the largest IBM Premier business partners in the Mid-Atlantic region. Before taking this position, Frank was Technical Account Manager, East Coast, for Linuxcare, providing professional services for major corporate and federal government clients. Prior to that he was Vice President, Engineering, for Glebe Electronics, Inc. Frank Hum has worked with numerous Government agencies, Fortune 500 firms, and small firms on information technology (IT) systems. He was a contributing author for LinuxUnleashed, Fourth Edition, and SuSELinux Unleashed, published by SAMS publishers.
