Smartphones Audience: Anyone with a mobile phone, PDA, and/or a smartphone Purpose: To wade through the hype surrounding the next generation of smartphones (including the iPhone) and to become more productive Description: While on the go, do you need a better way to keep in touch with colleagues, friends, and family via texting, instant messenging, e-mail, and the Web? Would you like an alternative to lugging around a heavy laptop to make presentations? If you answered "Yes," you won't want to miss this event—put it on your mobile calendar now! Smartphones are increasingly popular. And, as the next generation moves into the marketplace over the next 3 months, they will become ubiquitous. They are used for organizing business and leisure activities, and even for recreation. This presentation will describe what they are, what functions they are best suited to handle, what the choices are, how to set them up, and how to integrate and synchronize your smartphone with your PCs. In addition, attendees will learn what's available now in Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and PalmOS smartphones, what's arriving soon, pitfalls in selecting a device and a carrier, unlocked devices and options, "must have" software and hardware, and how to maximize productivity and troubleshoot. Derek is a lively presenter who will also share many ways to have fun with a smartphone! Already a smartphone guru? Come to this meeting and share your tips and tricks. Speaker: CPCUG member Derek Meyer, a consultant and trainer on wireless devices, has more than 10 years of experience in technology. During the last 3 years he has specialized in helping clients with smartphones, PDAs, Blackberry handhelds, PalmOS and Windows Mobile devices, a variety of cell phones, and their accessories. Working for Canon in his first year out of college, Derek did phone-based tech support for printers. Born in Washington, DC, Derek Meyer grew up and now lives in Alexandria, VA. Speaking fluent French and Spanish, along with a little Japanese, he has been called a Renaissance man. Derek is still trying to find more time to devote to his additional interests in writing and computer graphics. Post-Meeting Gathering: Speaker Derek Meyer will join us for continued conversation, networking, and refreshment across the street at Nanny O'Brien's. (Participants pay for their own food and beverages.) Agenda
