Author Talk:
A Whole New Mind:
Moving From the Information Age to the Conceptual Age
Speaker: Daniel H. Pink, also author of Free Agent Nation

"This book is a miracle. On the one hand, it provides a completely original and profound analysis of the most pressing personal and economic issue of the days ahead--how the gargantuan changes wrought by technology and globalization are going to impact the way we live and work and imagine the world. Then Dan Pink provides an equally profound and original and practical guidebook for survival--and joy--in this topsy-turvy environment. I was moved and disturbed and exhilarated all at once."

--Tom Peters, Author, In Search of Excellence and Re-Imagine!

"Brilliant! Left brain, right brain, whole brain--I love Dan Pink's brain. Read this book. Even more important, give this book to your children. They need to learn to think like Pink!"

--Alan Webber, Founding Editor, Fast Company

"Wow! This is not a self-help book. It's way more important than that. It's one of those rare books that marks a turning point, one of those books you wish you read before everyone else did. Once again, Dan Pink nails it."

--Seth Godin, Author, Purple Cow and Free Prize Inside

Description: Lawyers. Accountants. Radiologists. Software engineers. That's what our parents encouraged us to become when we grew up. But mom and dad were wrong. The future belongs to a very different kind of person with a very different kind of mind. The era of "left brain" dominance, and the Information Age that it engendered, are giving way to a new world in which "right brain" qualities--inventiveness, empathy, and meaning--predominate. That's the argument at the center of this provocative and original book, which uses the two sides of our brains as a metaphor for understanding the contours of our times.

A Whole New Mind reveals the six essential aptitudes on which professional success and personal fulfillment now depend, and includes a series of hands-on exercises culled from experts around the world to help readers sharpen necessary abilities. This book will change not only how we see the world but also how we experience it.

A book sale and signing of A Whole New Mind: Moving From the Information Age to the Conceptual Age, courtesy of Trover Shop, will follow the program. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Friends of the Cleveland Park Library.

Speaker: Daniel H. Pink is the author of A Whole New Mind, the groundbreaking guide to surviving, thriving, and finding meaning in an outsourced, automated, upside down world. His first book Free Agent Nation, about the growing ranks of people who work for themselves, was a nonfiction bestseller (The Washington Post) and a business bestseller in the United States, Canada, and Japan.

Dan is a contributing editor at Wired, and his articles on business and technology have also appeared in The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, and other publications. In addition, he has provided analysis on dozens of television and radio broadcasts, including CNBC's "Power Lunch," ABC's "World News Tonight," NPR's "Morning Edition," and American Public Media's "Marketplace."

As an independent business consultant, Dan Pink has advised start-up ventures and Fortune 100 companies on recruiting, business trends, and work practices. He held his last real job in the White House, where he served from 1995 to 1997 as chief speechwriter to Vice President Al Gore. He has also worked as an aide to U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich, an economic policy staffer in the U.S. Senate, a legal researcher in India, and a latrine builder in Botswana.

Dan Pink received a B.A. with honors in linguistics from Northwestern University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a J.D. from Yale Law School. To his lasting joy he has never practiced law. Dan lives in Washington, DC, with his wife and their three young children.

Dan may be reached via e-mail.
