Publishing Old and New:
One Man's Ventures in Bookworld
Speaker: Jeff Peters, Program Manager, Web Developer, and Consultant
Operational Technologies Services, Inc.

Audience: Those considering a book
venture and those considering other entrepreneurial startups

Description: At one time or another in our lives, many of us have imagined ourselves writing a book. Whether the  "great American novel" or another genre, a book captures our attention and carries a certain aura of authority. This session compares the speaker's experiences as an author published by a traditional publishing house and his subsequent efforts in starting his own small-volume publishing company.

The publishing industry can be notoriously difficult to break into as an author. The speaker provides comparisons of old and new approaches, and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Speaker:  Jeff Peters is a program manager, Web, developer, and consultant for Operational Technologies Services, Inc., in Vienna, Virginia. He is also a frequent speaker in the ColdFusion and Fusebox community. His Web site, GrokFusebox.com, is a repository of information for devotees of the Fusebox Web application framework.

Jeff is the author of Fusebox: Developing ColdFusion Applications (New Riders, 2002); ColdFusion Lists, Arrays, & Structures (Proton Arts, 2004); and Fusebox 4 & FLiP: Master-Class ColdFusion Applications (Proton Arts, 2004). He is also the owner of Proton Arts, a publishing/consulting company. Mr. Peters may be familiar to CPCUGers
from his days as a Monitor columnist, author of "The Webspinner."

Proton Arts is a small-volume publishing company based in Manassas, Virginia, and specializing in "the art of technology." Books from Proton Arts are
well-focused works on technical subjects, emphasizing the idea that even very technical disciplines have an artistic quality to them. Using the latest in print-on-demand technology and technically skilled editors, Proton Arts can move works into
print faster than many traditional publishing houses--an essential capability when producing works for the fast-moving tech sector.
